Porkbusters.org pro-actively mobilized a concerned community to identify which US senator unilaterally blocked Senate Bill 2590. The bill would create a public web archive where all could see an itemized accounting of US Government expenditures - creating transparency and hopefully initiating conversations among constituencies. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) is not sure that the cost of building and maintaining a website would be financially viable - a site that would have to document millions or billions of pet projects. More over Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) is the only Senator to not make a declarative statement confirming or denying a hold. Interesting that these two Senator are notorious for the disproportionate amount of Federal dollars they funnel back to their states.
Porkbusters mobilized their community based on a collective sentiment of being taken advantage of by authority figures. They created a direct call to action and then encouraged their base to execute it. Furthermore the website created a self feeding cycle by posting responses and progress urging on the volunteers to complete the task. This is an almost ideal model for the implementation of virtual volunteerism.
