Social Network and Your Brand

Steve Ganz, Sushi and Robots Boagworld, Ordered List,

Part of the challenge is social networks is perception and how your avatar is perceived. There is value in having a persistent avatar – but make sure it is the correct avatar picture. Commenting can positively impact your personal brand. Volume and content are key in others perception of you. Commit over the long term. Be honest, consistent and represent yourself as you are and maintain attitude across the board. Take inventory of what is out there on the web about you. Making comments on the internet is open, public, and permanent.

The development of social relationships and damage control is all part of existing in fast moving arena of online media and space. Relationships move quickly and missteps are amplified. Retaliations and flame wars are counterproductive and reflect poorly on you for engaging in the behavior. Take disagreements offline and treat the other person publicly with respect.

Human Rights, and Virtual Poperty Rights

The panelists consist of professionals from GoPets, Live gamer, and Charles River Ventures. One of the questions that often comes up is are game designers responsible of devaluation of valuable goods in world? The panelist seem to agree that part of game play is treating player fairly but game owners can not be held accountable for market forces.Marketing side is more important than the legal side. Treat the customers well in protecting their content (not necessarily guaranteeing value). EULAs help to determine publisher responsibilities, but again vthe questions are all centered on the challenges of the legal vs. the ethical.
Part of the limiting factors of WOW is the lack of human and property rights within the game. One amazing questions becomes inheritance and willing of objects. Monetary value that is assigned to avatars and to activity is difficult to assign since there is not always a definitive dollar value to an object or a skill set.

Mobile Active

Mobile active.org There is a complicated ecosystem of many stake holders including carriers, customers, and content generators. Spam is a major concern of carriers as well as customers to avoid sms spam. SMS is the king in countries outside of the

US

because of cost of voice. SMS is cheap and voice is expensive and unreliable. Lots of mobile innovation is based by the capabilities of the audience. Short code vs. 800 number. ‘Say Now’ Campaigns are looking the use of voice on the mobile – asterisk as an open source PBX. It is being used with mobile to help route people to critical information in specific languages. SMS was the major mode of communication in the Thai demonstration not only because it is inexpensive but also because it is fast and viral.

Part of the appeal of mobile is it is inexpensive but the challenge is balancing the intrusion of the SMS and the call with he privacy rights and desires of the customer.

How Manga Explains The World

At SXSW and enjoying the first panel of 2008. My flight challenges and weather prevented me from getting Here yesterday afternoon, but if you have lemons ... make lemonade.

Daniel H. Pink is using Japanese comics to help explain copy right issues and remix culture. As a premise it is powerful. I there is extreme copyright on creative works it not only kills re-mix culture, but eventually it eats away at relationship. In

Japan

the remix culture of Manga comics is actually promoting Manga (official woks) and Dojishi (remix made by fan). The remixes are the most loyal customers and the fans that consume the Dojishi are also rabid fans. In accepting the re-mix there are a few advantages business wise. 1. Customer care – helps to revive and maintain the market 2. Talent market – give real publishers previews of artists that have built-in followings. 3. Market Research – publishers can read the Dojishi remixes to see where the fan trends are headed. Also is remix cultures abandon a Manga line it is like the canary in the coal mine – an early warning system.

Best part of the panel - We are all getting a free preview copy of his new Manga publication - 'The Adventures of Johny Bunko'. I am beyond excited! How cool can the new Business book be - it is a Manga Cartoon!

SXSW Activity Hub

Exactly one week from today David Neff and I will speaking at SXSW on "The Future of Volunteers". Our panel will feature a frank and honest look at what non-profits need to do to recruit the next generation of volunteers. You know all those ladies and gents that are your Board of Directors right now? Well they won't be around forever. In fact do you have anyone under 40 on your board? And more importantly is that even what volunteers want to do any more? These are the types of question we will be discussing. We are lucky enough to also have Patty Goldman from March of Dimes, Ford Cochran from National Geographic and Fayandria from Second Life speaking as well.

Grab a free pass here if you want and let us know you are coming!

49th International Conference on Health and Science Communications

This year's theme is: Riding the Creative Wave in Technology.  The conference has a jam-packed schedule with spectacular keynotes, workshops, tours and events that you will not want to miss!  Connect with other health care and science communications professionals, as we explore the themes of virtual space and health care informatics.

You can review the full program and speakers, access the registration form, and make hotel reservations at www.hesca.org/newhaven.

SXSW Schedule released

SXSW released their schedule recently and I am happy to tell everyone that we will be presenting Monday afternoon at 3:30. I am overly excited about the panel we have put together with speakers from the March of Dimes, National Geographic, and the American Cancer Society. It is going to be exceptionally interesting and entertaining, focusing in on where are we as organizations supposed to go to attract and retain volunteers. The Future of Volunteers; Adapt or Die!

Influence of Internal and External Networks on the Outcomes of Strategic Change in Organizations

Alexander Alexiev is presenting on the internal and external networks have direct impact on strategic decision making from top level leadership. The complexity of decision making is complex so the research looked at the difference in exploitation and exploration. He is looking at the network differentiation in ration vs. consensus decision making. Only Ration is featured in the report. Two major factors were the homogeneity and consistency of senior management and the change pace of the market the industry was in.

In exploration having a Heterogeneous  board for  exploration overrules outside social network influences. The same thing is true in the dynamic fast paced environment - a heterogeneous core is very critical. One of the key future factors will be the tracking of centrality of executive officers and the bounds of external networks and their reach. Access of those networks is also a key consideration. The dependent variable was sales and product development and the question was if the new innovations were tied to new technologies or revivals of existing items.

Conflics Between Reciprosity and Rationale

The Study by Phillip Bonacich is looking at the norms of reciprocity, which has been explained as a rational behavior such as the prisoners dilemma situation. He is looking at the structural implication of reciprocity networks.  What w was interesting in the study was tat knowledge of the network in the simulations severely skews natural behavior and also created value exchanges that would not occur blind in the filtered network. With network knowledge there is a variable of exploitation where certain positions will exploit other. In network study knowledge of network construction can help to eliminate the potential for the exploitation variable and create a even field for exchange.

INSNA Conference morning sessions

Neighborhood norms of Reciprocity, Netwrok Social Capital and Depressive symptoms.

Valerie Haines presented this unique study that examined health care, and how neighborhoods helped themselves stay connected to mental health care in particular surrounding depressive symptoms. The study looked at 32 neighborhoods in a mid sized southern city. They study employed phone and personal interviews. The study was looking at Network social capital – the ability and capacity to get members of the network the capital and access they need. The questions looked at perception of how willing neighbors were to be of help. The research questioned a set of resources including education, health care, and employment resources. The studies overall state that perceived support is more important than received support.

The study found that the access to social capital impacts depressive systems. Moreover the study team did conduct a study in

New Orleans

pre-Katrina and they plan to return to follow up, now that a good amount of the network social capital has been eroded by the storm and ensuing population change.

Mass Media Programming and Contraceptive use in

Nepal

Marc Boulay

The study evaluated the personal network for injunctive (active) and Descriptive norms (passive) around birth control. So the study looked at if these norms influenced birth control adoption and how. This is a significant research as it addresses basic personal network power to persuade an individual health choice. As a matter of research it shows that if a majority (51%) of your network uses contraceptive then you are 90% more likely to do so. Moreover there was an additive effect (sum is greater than the parts) when there was injunctive and descriptive norms in individual’s personal network. As a matter of research those who listened to the radio serials that discussed birth control, and then participated in a discussion group, were much more likely to have a favorable opinion of contraceptive.

Social network activities in Health Promoting Schools in Thiland

The WHO identifies

Health

Promoting

School

as an effective methodology to develop effective education system within countries.

Thailand

began the HPS in 1988. The study looks at networks of Gold standard quality (as measured by 10 metrics set by the Thai education department) and Bronze schools. The researcher looked at the difference between the network structure of the school population using survey questions and UCINet for analysis.  One of the questions that was posed in the discussion was if a segregated group that appeared on the network map were the smokers.

How Does network Structure impact performance – On Water Collection and Utilization

Water collectives serve about 850 K households with some cooperative being as small as 40 houses and some being as large as 50,000 houses. The cooperative managers were a key subject in the study. The study looked at how do different networks address the low income household need for water. Part of the intrigue is that water cooperatives serve a wide range of socio economic homes from lean-toos to million dollar mansions. Social networks of the water managers as well as the social pressures are key to keeping the water on to all homes. Formal affiliation with a national water management organization or another national league did not have a significant impact on the performance of the water cooperative.
