Today on NPR Neda Ulaby has a nice interview with Lawrence Lessig that explained some of the complexities involving fair use and public domain of presidential speeches and recorded images. It was an interesting yet simple lesson on who owns what aspects of a broadcast and recorded presentation, who can use it, and how.
Society is looking for some way to take advantage of the revolutionary capability of producing, storing, and transmitting intellectual material at plunging costs. Eventually the system will reach near zero cost. But all business models are based on restricting access. There's a lot more here than copyright. It's a long term issue of "what's mine" vs "what's yours" and whether, some day, it makes any difference.
