After getting a heads up from my friend Jeremy Seda of Xtensive Multimedia Solutions about this scam telephone service I blogged about it. I guess a few people read the posting, or the word got around and people are starting to wise up to the game they play. In the extended post is a comment from one Walter Ford who details his experience. I am glad that this technology may be helping people avoid scams.
Two days ago, 6/14/2005 I was contacted by the same company. They referred to themselves as "SBC Preferred Long Distance". While listening to their pitch I asked several times if they were SBC, they answered yes. Near the end of the call they asked for my name, I replied that if they really were SBC they would have my name. I asked if their company name was "Preferred Long Distance" and they replied yes. I terminated the call immediately.

Just got the Preferred LD high-pressure pitch call. Same routine as described above. Promised a $20 a month reduction in my bill. Claimed to be an authorized reseller for Century Link. Claimed no contract, quit at any time, yada-yada-yada.
I said I wasn't interested in a billing reduction, what I wanted was high-speed Internet (currently have 1.5 mbps DSL). She claimed they could give me 7.0 on the same line that Century Link has told me (repeatedly) needed line upgrades to handle faster speeds than 1.5.
I asked how they plan to give me 7.0, when C/L can't. Answer: "Oh, we'll send out the equipment." What kind? "A modem."
"How can your modem give me 7.0 when Century Link's line is limited to 1.5?" Hem-haw. I ended the call saying I was not changing my phone service without doing some due diligence on my own. Got an argument about that, and subsequently hung up on them.
Definitely, a scam.
