Just got a call from PLD. Same scam... googled PLD when on the phone and found this site. Thank God. Told them I need to check something and they hung up on me. Don't fall for this scam! Thanks for the site.

Rolly

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this forum. PLD called and it seemed too good to be true. I will apply the things I learned from the comments when they call back.

Thanks again

Dan

I also got a call from these guys a few weeks ago, but didn't have time to research until just recently and they've called back many times (Mike Rodgers actually.) I did get their website when I first talked to him and told him I wouldn't switch anything without research first, so the site he gave me was http://www.preferredld.com/. It's ok site, but lacking details on critical things, so I was skeptical and doing some more google'ing and found this site. Thanks for all the great info, I don't have time not desire to put my company through this kind of hassle so can definitely say we won't even be considering them.

Wow, what a pressure call I just received when I asked them not to call again I got sent to a manager. He was heavy also.

They claimed they were quest at first until I told them I didn't even use quest. When I started to question the manager about that he stated that he was not going to get into a "pissing contest" with me. I hung up.

got called by this PLD, what a bunch of bull! They started to tell me that they could lower my phone bill from $180 pr month to a price of $80.00 per month. I was also told I could keep my own phone # on all three lines. I asked why is the phone bill so much cheaper than AT&T and JOHN BREEZE told me that the federal tax was being discontinued for small buss. BS!!!!!!! I spend over 8 min. with this con man. Just be careful with these people!!!!!!!

Robert Deacon

They told me they were AT&T and they were just giving me a courtsey call about my new lower rates for small business. I didn't believe them from the start and then they said that it would be AT&T but billed from Preferred. I told them the best way they could save me money was by hanging up and letting me get back to work. They at least did that.

Drop the FCC a line via their online compalint form the more they hear from people the more evidence against these slammers. If they would just tell you they are trying to get you to switch companies I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's the lying that they are AT&T that's bad.

I got a call from this company saying they were AT&T and wanted to lower our long distance rates. They said it was just a courtesy call, that they were just letting us know and that we did not have to do anything. Then he asked me if I was interested at which point he put me on hold and another man came on. When I asked this man who would be billing me he said it would be Preferred but our rates would go down. I told both men I'd have to research it. I asked for a phone number and he told me I'd get one at the end of the call if I was interested but refused to give one to me. They did not know the name on the account and kept asking for it. I did not agree to any changes on our phone service.

Glad I found this site right before the very end of the SECOND verification phone call. It all just seemed too strange. I asked my secretary to call AT&T this morning to check into some better long distance rates and lo and behold minutes later AT&T (or so they said) called us. Went through a very long sales process where they said they could save me $15 off main line, $10 off the next two and replace a $60 international fee with a $12.95 monthly fee if we keep it under 1800 minutes for all three lines. She said looking at my past statements she could tell that I average below 1000 minutes for the lines. So, I assumed it must be AT&T if she had access to my statements!

I kept saying, "I can cancel at anytime if I find that this change to my service is not worth it, right" and she always said, "yes, we will give you a customer service number at the end of the process to contact and cancel whenver you like for no penalty or fee". I still had no callback number at the end when she was calling the 3rd party verifier while I was on the line, so I asked again and she said I would get the number after the verification was complete.

So, I answer the verifier's questions and somewhere in the middle of his rapid-fire shpiel he says "you are aware that the new provider for your local and long distance will be preferred long distance, not AT&T and that they are separate companies". I said, what? He said, I need a "yes" or "no". Confused I said "yes". Then he said he had to hang up and call back with two more questions. This was getting too weird, why would he have to hang up and call back? So, then I googled and found this and many other sites about it being a scam. HE calls back, asks me for my birthday and to verify I'm switching to Preferred. I said "no, I want to cancel" and he hung up.

Thanks for the warning, wish I would have known earlier. I hope I don't get charged anyway!

I got the phone call form them today. With high sale pith and everting sounded too good to be true...I told them I wanted to do more research about their company, and they gave me thire web site, www.preferredld.com and said they would call be back. Their website looked OK, but when I googled I found this blog. Thank you everyone for sharing, and no need to speak to Preferred never ever again.

Michele

Just received a call from Preferred LD, Inc. Was almost considering their no fee, no contract, no out of pocket expense cheaper rate bid; however, thank god I was at my computer and found this site. I am always hesitant and feel there is always a catch. Thanks for this great info.

HI! IM A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF QUOTE PREFERRED TELECOM. AND YOUR RIGHT...BIG SCAM!!! THEY ARE NOT BASED IN ENCINO CA. BUT IN LAS VEGAS NEVADA UNDER THE NAME INNOVATIVE MARKETING SOLUTIONS GROUP. PHONE NUMBER 702-463-4106. YOU CAN ASK FOR DONTE. IM GOING TO INCLUDE OUR SCRIPT SO THAT WHEN YOU HEAR IT YOU WILL KNOW TO TERMINATE THE CALL. HI I NEED TO SPEAK TO THE PERSON WHO HANDLES THE AT&T/QWEST LOCAL PHONE ACCOUNT. THIS IS...AND MAY I ASK WHO IM SPEAKING WITH PLEASE? GREAT!THE PURPOSE FOR MY CALL TODAY IS TO INFORM ALL SMALL TO MID SIZED BUISINESSES IN REGARDS TO A FEASIBLE RATE REDUCTION,AND WHAT THIS DOES IS SIMPLY REDUCE YOUR LOCAL RATES FROM THE HIGHER RETAIL RATES YOUR ON NOW,DOWN TO A CHEAPER WHOLESALE RATE WITHOUT PHYSICALLY CHANGING ANYTHING YOU CURRENTLY HAVE OR DO WITH YOUR EXISTING SERVICE. SO BASICALLY ITS A GOOD NEWS CALL FOR A CHANGE. SO HAVE YOU BEEN NOTIFIED OR HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS YET MEANING HAS SOMEBODY LOWERED YOUR BILL IN THE LAST MONTH OR SO? (IF CUSTOMER SAYS YES:REP SAYS,I DO APOLOGIZE BUT IM NOT SHOWING ANY SAVINGS HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED, BUT ILL MAKE SURE THAT IT GETS TAKEN CARE OF FOR YOU ONCE AND FOR ALL! GO BACK TO SCRIPT) NOW ,IM SHOWING HERE THAT YOU ARE STILL WITH AT&A/QWEST FOR YOUR LOCAL SERVICE,CORRECT? GREAT, AND JUST SO YOU KNOW WHATS PROMPTED THE CHEAPER PHONE BILL IS THE IDEA THAT LARGER COMPANIES WHO HAVE OVER 30 LINES,LIKE SEARS AND PEPSI,THEY SPEND THOUSANDS A MONTH FOR THEIR SERVICE,SO IN RETURN THEYRE REWARDED WITH DISCOUNT PRICES BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGH VOLUME,WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND ,SMALLER BUISNESSES LIKE YOUR,RECEVIE NO SPECIAL TREATMENT AND ARE FORCED TO PAY A HIGHER RETAIL PRICE. BUT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO HELP WITH THAT TODAY. NOW DO YOU HAVE LESS THAN 30 LINES FOR THE BUISNESS CORRECT? HOW MANY LINES DO YOU HAVE THERE? OK,TO SPEED THINGS UP AND GET YOU BACK TO YOUR DAY CAN I PULL YOU CUSTOMER SERVICE RECORD TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT THE WHOLESALE RATES CAN BE? THEN AS WERE QUOTE PULLING YOUR RECORD THE GUY BEHIND ME JUMPS ON THE PHONE TO SELL. ITS NOT A CURTOSY CALL IN REGARD TO A RATE REDUCTION...ITS THE BEGINNING OF ONE HELLA LARGE PHONE BILL. HOPE THIS HELPS!!! SORRY TO EVERYONR WHO WAS MISLEAD ON BEHALF OF MYSELF I APOLOGIZE.

Ok people..i work for PLD and it is not a scam! The entire conversation is recorded and monitored by the FCC!! The above posting by Bridgette is not even our script! You cant even understand it! If we were truly scamming people the government would've already shut us down! We've been in business for years. And any person that asks to speak with AT&T is fine with me and i always call tham back. I could careless if they call them because i honestly do want to save their company money. This makes me so mad because i know the the company i work for is legit! After all as I said before the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REGULATES US!

Jack Frost

How long can this company be allowed to continue these practices?
They're still doing this today.
They called us claiming to be from AT&T.

Why hasn't there been a class action against these people?

Jack Frost

To "youdontneedtokonw"

Sorry, but the company you work for IS a scam.
They're just very good at following FCC regulations while doing it, apparently.
Highly unethical, and I honestly don't know how you assholes sleep at night knowing you're scamming people out of their hard earned money.

Daphne

I almost got scammed, at least I hope it was almost. I was sent to the verification process twice but never finished because I was asking them questions. PLD misrepresented themselves, and I was misquoted the first call so had to start over. The second time, I asked a question that ended the call. The PLD senior marketing manager, calling himself Jonathon Klauss, was angry with me for asking too many questions. He said I was much smarter than their other customers (asking all these questions), and he couldn't do business with us since we didn't make it through the verification process after 2 tries. Thank goodness, if he's telling the truth. David Goodman, the marketing manager, was who I did all the wheeling and dealing with. When it came time to make the decision, he refused to email me what we agreed upon (including a conservative estimate of the total bill). Then he would not return my calls or talk to me. That's when Jonathon (mentioned above) called. He was very rude. "We don't return calls because it costs lots of money. No we will not fax or email what we agreed upon" ETC... I can only hope it is all over. Just to be safe, I called Qwest to tell them what happened, and they put a security measure on the phone line so it cannot be switched.

mh

I work 4 pld u folks have it all wrong 1st months bill is higher then 2nd and all after and there are 1000s of happy customers if not at&t and qwest would discontinue the interconnection agreement with us and we'd be out of busines ,but we're not and won't be soon.

Tom

I have been a customer of Preferred for about 5 years now and they are great. It is funny how all these people have all this time to post their non-sense instead of running their business. I quess they need someone to blame for their failure in life.

K.J.

OK People, I am actually a Manager at Preferred, I sign up customers everyday. Me persoanally as a manger, I will not sign up people whose bill is already too cheap, ~I don't have anyone jump over a dollar to pick up a penny!~
Most of the people who have had a bad experince with my company are people who have not had the progam explained to them properly.
For example Someone has 1 line with 6 features and voicemail. Their bill from ATT is $65.00 including tax. PLD charges 12.95 for voicemail 3.95 for each feature, 39.95 for the line and 5.9 cent per minute for long distance. when you add the price of the features it is already more, and what if; perhaps the customer was making a lot of long disctance minutes to call family?

All the angry people here probably DID get a higher bill, and that is because they did'nt take the time to listen, and make sure it was an actual savings!

My company is the largest customer of ALL the major networks(ATT-Qwest-Sprint-Verizion-SBC).....And compared to the hundreds of thousands of customers we have the few people here; who are mad is a small percentage!!!

You know there are still things that work and are a benefit to you! Tele-marketing is just 1 convient form of communication between people!

I have been scammed by Preferred Telephone Co. After talking to my son at our business number, they inferred they were associated with AT&T. Swithed to preferred and the charges were horrendous. Cancelled, returned to AT&T and now we have been sent to collections. Will ignore this after calling them

I received a call from "Preferred Long Distance" today. They offered to lower my monthly bill by half. I asked them to send me some information so that I could go over this with my business partner. He said, "Are you telling me that your business partner doesn't want to save money?" I told him that I must be careful and make sure I understand the plan, and he proceeded to hang up on me. Anyone who has ever operated in a professional capacity would never do such a thing. Whether or not they are working a scam (and I think they are), they are being rather counter-productive with this ridiculous behavior. Honest people have no need to behave in such a rude manner, so I can only assume they are not honest. To PLD I say "good riddance." (Actually, their rudeness probably saved me a lot of money!)

I have spent numerous hours and phone calls trying to restore my normal business operation after being scammed by Preferred Long Distance. Everyone, please report them to the FCC and Attorney General in your state to make them cease operations in your area.

Liz

This company is a scam! Beaware when they get you to sign up and then you realize on your next longdistance bill it is hundreds of dollars higher, then you cancel their service they will get back on your bill without authorization. Talk to your current phone company to Block Preferred Long Distance out completely. I suggest everyone reporting them to www.fcc.gov

Hey, I just wanted to help people get some facts straight. I work with prefered and everyone here has the wrong idea about the business. Basically what prefered does, is buy the minutes that a business owner would purchse from At&t or Qwest. We buy these minutes in bulk at a discounted rate and simply resell it to our customers keeping 2/3 of the discount and giving 1/3 to our customers. Simple as that. As for how the process is done, all you need is a neutral third party verification which we connect you with and answer all their questions. If you agree to their terms you are validated and reconnected with your Prefered Agent.

The trick to using prefered effectively is to be a company that does not use over 100 minuted of long distance calling in a month. And not care for features such as three way calling, CAller ID... etc... they are about 5 dollars each and stack up. If you are a simple business owner who just wants a phone in their office for basic duties, then you will be saving a lot of money compared to at&t and especially Qwest who charges everyone the same rate.

Prefered simply offers a flexible call plan. By understanding the business you could actually save a lot of money. But it is simply hit or miss, either it will work for you or won't.

Information wise, when we call people. We have leads provided by Qwest and At&t which is why some people claim that they've given us a lead or permission which by word is absolutely true. This includes their Name, Number and company name if it was provided to those companies. If you guys have any other questions feel free to ask.

Ive worked for a lot of odd companies and i'll be happy to answer them.

I am a preferred long distance representative.
I've only been working there since June 1st.
it is true that the company name is cTel.
the website is preferredld.com
there are two business locations.
The one in Columbia and the one in Nashville.
I, myself, work at the Columbia location.
preferred is a seperate company from AT&T/qwest.
we do not have a billing arrangement with AT&T/qwest.
Our billing arrangement is through USBI, which is the company that produces/prints the bill.
I'm only 18 and it's my first job.
I have called people in the qwest campaign that have switched to preferred who are very satisfied customers.
They stated that their first bill was slightly high
(this can be due to if you already have a contract with AT&T/qwest. although we do not have cancellation fees, there are fees if you void your contract with them) but the rest of their bills have been as promised with the low rates.
Whether or not switching to preferred benefits you all depends on the amount of long distance calls you make. We do not offer unlimited. It is only charging for your usage.
AT&T:
For Cali it's 2.9 cents per min state to state and 8.9 cpm in state.
For everywhere else it's 3.9 cpm state to state and 7.9 in state.
Low flat fee of $8.95 per month.
Qwest:
Same cents per minute. But low flat fee of $9.95 per month.
According to all the people I've called, qwest calls their customers repeatedly. I most often get yelled at by people who think I'm qwest calling them for the ten millionth time that month.

Lastly, I would very much appreciate it if you wouldn't yell, cuss or slam phones in the representatives ears. We are wearing headsets and it's extremely loud. Also, unless you specifically say 'put me on the do not call list' you are put back into the system. all it takes is a simple 'no thank you, put me on the do not call list'
we are at work, like regular people.
we're just doing our job and since we are on the phones practically all day, all it takes is one rude person to ruin our day.
I hope this cleared up some questions.
