Facebook is now an open system where anyone can register and participate. Oh goodness. Now anyone who wants to join and get access to the 'student space' now can. Oh goodness. Marketers who want to solicit and hock items to the members of the previous walled community can now hock and solicit. Double oh goodness. danah shares similar sentiments albeit I am not sure she has the energy right now to express what I assume is going to be a her mix of confusion, anger, and disappointment.
I believe this opening is following up on the news that Facebook may be for sale. Opening up the registration system to inflate the population of the site to inflate the perceived value of the network. If this is the intent the move is counterproductive. The value in Facebook was having a sealed off exclusive community for those who are students. I'd just like to know who in the world suggested the idea.
Thou they have opened up myspace will stay in the lead. We use myspace to promote our club. whats cool is the automation software out there like http://www.myfriendbuilder.com/ it automates adding friends and emails. Probably not for what you are useing myspace for but it is great for bars and bands.
