Position Description
Keeps current on Web 2.0 trends and develops and executes ideas
leveraging Web 2.0 opportunities for Society communications and media
relations programs. Maintains an ongoing knowledge of new/e-media
tools; such as social media press releases, and provides strategic
counsel on using these platforms to advance the Society’s messages to
traditional journalists and bloggers. Responsible for creating and
maintaining content on the Society’s newsroom,
www.cancer.org/pressroom, assisting in the implementation of earned
news media relations and reporting results of outreach to national news
media. Supports the corporate communications e-media activities of
American Cancer Society Divisions and Strategic Business Units. Must
understand online and traditional media relations practices and have
proven success with media placements.

Recommends and implements Web-based communications strategies and
tactics for Society awareness campaigns, including use of Web 2.0 tools.
• Designs and maintains Web-based newsroom on cancer.org to achieve maximum functionality for press.

Oversees the Society’s communications blogs and works with experts on
content, Recommends new features and improvements to the blog.
• Develops relationships with press and bloggers covering Web 2.0 and other Society-relevant topics.
• Writes and edits press releases, op-eds, letters-to-the editor, talking points; pitch letters etc.
• Responds to media inquiries and proactively pitches stories.
• Arranges and monitors media interviews with Society staff and volunteer experts.

Works with Web team and others to develop and troubleshoot online
pressroom and support brand and communications opportunities with new
media ventures.
• Coordinates Web-based press briefings.
• Assists with tracking and reporting media interaction and results/trends and measuring success of press outreach.
• Synthesizes complex scientific content into clearly understood communications.
• Provides materials and recommendations on media interaction upon request from Society Divisions and Units.
• Consistent ability to set and deliver against a work plan in a fast-paced environment.
• Must have a great attitude and strong willingness to learn and be challenged.
• Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
• Bachelor's degree required, preferably in journalism, public relations, or related field.
• Established, proven relationships with bloggers and reporters, writers and producers who cover the online/technology space.
•
Established, proven relationships with health/medical/scientific
reporters, writers and producers – or demonstrated capability – and
tangible past proof of performance.
• Proven experience with Web 2.0 platforms or using new media approaches in communications activities.
• Excellent written, oral, analytical, interpersonal skills required.
• Computer skills (including the Internet) required.
• Must be a self-starter, able to work independently on a variety of simultaneous projects, but also within a team structure.
• Must have healthcare/science/medicine communications experience. Cancer knowledge is a plus.

A minimum of five years of experience with a progressive set of
responsibilities in media relations with proven media placement results.
• Knowledge of cancer and other healthcare issues a plus.
